MHFA is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. The aims of MHFA are to:
- preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others
- provide help to prevent the mental health problem developing into a more serious state
- promote recovery of good mental health
- provide comfort to a person suffering a mental illness
MHFA does not teach people how to be therapists. Rather, it teaches how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and how to go about guiding a person towards appropriate professional help.
This program teaches participants how to use an action plan to assess risk and provide support in the first instance. It is appropriate for all staff who want to develop knowledge and practical skills in situations where either staff or students may be experiencing a mental health crisis.
About the Trainer: The courses will be conducted by Donna Harriss. She is a registered psychologist working within the Student Centre (Support). This program is supported by funding from the Mental Health Initiative which, in part, aims to promote mental health awareness to all staff as well as providing support for students experiencing a significant mental health condition. Donna has worked in a variety of settings including a psychiatric in-patient hospital, chronic pain clinic and Centrelink. Her role within the University of Tasmania is to promote mental health awareness to all staff as well as providing support for students experiencing a significant mental health condition.
These courses are designed to be interactive and the trainer encourages all participants to bring their own professional experiences to discuss within the sessions.
